This department comprises four section:-

ComputerMathsEnglishUgama

COMPUTER SECTION

The Computer Section is one of the major constituents of the General Studies Department of Jefri Bolkiah college of Engineering. The computer Section was formulated as a separate section in August 1991. This section moved into its new premises in 1992.

Computing Facilities

Currently the section maintains 4 computer laboratories equipped with IBM PC XT, IBM PS/2 55SX (80386SX microprocessor) and IBM PC AT Compatibles (80386DX microprocessor) machines.

Moreover the computer rooms and various sections of the college are connected to file servers under Novell Netware Local Area Network. The Computer Section strives hard to keep itself up to date on computer software. For this purpose a software and book library is well established in the section which partially fulfils the needs of staff and students.

Staffing

At present the section is run by 7 well qualified teaching staff, 3 teacher trainees and two supporting staff.

Objectives

Computer section has four major objectives:

  1. Offers computer studies course at National Diploma Level
  2. Provides computing as service courses to other Engineering Sections of the college.
  3. Promotes computer literacy among the Bruneian community
  4. Assists the college staff and administration to resolve their computer needs.

BDTVEC National Diploma, Computer Studies

This is a two and a half year duration course offered by this section under Brunei Darussalam Technical and Vocational Education Council (BDTVEC). Students taking this course spends two years at the college. In addition, students enhance their knowledge and gain hand-on experience by a six month industrial attachment. This course is modelled after the BTEC National Certificate course in Computer Studies (UK) and adapted to suit the needs of the youth of Brunei Darussalam.

Course Objectives

Major objectives of BDTVEC National Diploma in Computer Studies course are:

  1. To provide students with skills and knowledge to qualify for position in Government, business, industry, and the private sector.
  2. To give students the basic qualifications that will enable them to undertake higher education in Brunei or abroad.
  3. To make students aware of the broad social implications of the use of computer-based systems.

Course Structure

This course is divided into two levels:

Following is a list of courses offered at various levels:

LEVEL I

  1. Introduction To Programming
  2. Computer Systems
  3. Information Systems
  4. Quantitative Methods
  5. Communication Skills
  6. Data Communication & Networks

    LEVEL II

  7. Software Development Concepts
  8. Programming Practice (COBOL)
  9. Programming Project
  10. Small Business Computer System Concepts
  11. Small Business Computer System Practices

  1. All the core units of National Level I should be passed by the students before proceeding to Level II
  2. On completion of National Level II the students must have achieved a minimum of 15 credit units.

Job Opportunities / Future Plans

Due to rapid computerisation in Brunie Darussalam, job opportunities for the qualified computer personnel has been very encouraging. After the completion of the course our students have been successfully employed in the private and public sector. However some of the students preferred to continue their higher education locally and abroad. We are pleased to mention that some of our former students were selected for overseas scholarships.

As a Service Section

Beside offering a National Diploma course in computing, this section instructs computer units to other sections. Some of the service courses offered are:

  1. Information Technology(for all Pre-National Diploma in Engineering Courses)
  2. Computer Studies in Engineering Applications(for various Engineering courses)
  3. Software Design Methods(for National Diploma in Electrical Engineering and Instrumentation Control Courses)
  4. Computer Assignments II(for National Diploma in Welding and Fabrication Course)
  5. Service Control Systems(for National Diploma in Building Services Course)

    Computer Literacy for Bruneian Community

The Computer Section since its inception has been involved with promoting computer literacy. On various occasion we offered courses for the employees of Government Departments, local banks, armed forces, Government Schools and our own college staff. Some of the courses offered were:

    1. Operating Systems (DOS and Windows)
    2. Word Processing (Wordstar, Wordperfect and MS Word)
    3. Data Base Management (dBase III plus)
    4. Integrated Software (Lotus 123 and MS Excel)

    Mathematics & Science Section

This Section is a service section in the General Studies Department. An effort is made to work closely with other engineering disciplines and integrate Mathematics and Engineering Science into the relevant fields of studies, rather than considering these subjects as totally independent subjects. We teach, develop and promote these two subjects to enhance students' knowledge and confidence especially in the applications of Mathematics and Science in their respective engineering studies.

    Facilities

There are four classrooms and two well equipped science laboratories to cater for various levels of engineering.

    Staffing

Currently this Section is run by eight qualified and experienced instructors (five Mathematics instructors and three Science instructors), one teacher trainee and two supporting staff.

    Aims and objectives

The aims and objectives of this Section which emphasizes more on practical problems faced by technicians and tradesmen in their course of studies, are to:
    • provide students with an understanding of basic concepts of Engineering Science, Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics and Calculus
    • consolidate basic principles already learnt by the students, taking into account the wide variety of approaches to Mathematics and Science likely to have been encountered previously
    • develop a facility in the language of Mathematics and Science as an aid to further studies in mathematical techniques used in Science, Engineering and Technology
    • help to develop logical thinking and confidence in the selection and use of appropriate mathematical techniques to support the study of other subjects particularly those of an applied science in nature.

    Functions and responsibilities

Apart from teaching and developing Mathematics and Science, this Section is actively involved in:
    • developing, reviewing and upgrading new and present courses offered by the Brunei Darussalam Technical and Vocational Education Council (BDTVEC)
    • participating in extra curricular activities e.g. Australian Mathematics Competition, Brunei Mathematics Society and Brunei Association for Science Education (BASE)
    • evaluating and reviewing courses and programmes to ensure that they successfully achieve the goals and objectives of producing technicians and tradesmen that meet the needs and expectations of business and industries
    • conducting special workshops and short courses for the local community
    • developing assessments in the form of written tests and assignments, marking and record keeping, preparing students' progress reports
    • diagnosing weakness and suggesting remedial measures for the students who lag behind or show poor performance in their learning abilities.

      ENGLISH SECTION

This section teaches English to students on all courses in the college. This section focuses on developing such skills as writing, understanding instruction, technical descriptions and reports.

      UGAMA SECTION

This section teaches Islamic Religious Knowledge to all classes. It is also involved in the Religious and Moral Conduct of the college and organises various religious function and welfare activities.
