ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING SECTION
This section offers two BND courses; BND in Electrical & Electronic Engineering and BND in Industrial Measurements and Control Engineering course which is run collaboration with Brunei Shell Petroleum Company.
Brunei Darussalam National Diploma
Course Description5>
The course structure has a continuing theme of electrical and electronic engineering, backed up by engineering science, mathematics, computer application in engineering and related engineering studies. Emphasis is given to the utilisation and control of electrical energy. Theoretical and practical technical subjects are dealt with so as to relate them to current engineering practice. The content of subjects is kept in line with the rapidly advancing technology. Various modern trainers are widely used within the course. The course educates potential leaders, able to work in multi-disciplinary teams in engineering profession, capable of adapting to the complex technological and human problems which they will encounter in society. In the course structure there is a subject in improving communication skills and leadership capabilities.
The course is offered as a cooperative education program Full-time students intermit their formal academic studies to enter industrial attachment for a period of three months. The academic component of the course is present in two stages extending over eight semesters.
At the end of last academic stages of the course, students are send to the suitable industrial for attachment. The aim of this attachment is to familiarise students with the industrial work environment.
After completion of the course the students were employed by government departments and companies such as Brunei Shell Petroleum Company.
Laboratories & Facilities
Facilities Machines Laboratories
Machines Laboratory
The machines laboratory is equipped with a comprehensive range of rotating machines, transformers, power circuit element and various equipment constructed as part of a number of project development programmes. There is an extensive range of electronic power measuring instruments, oscilloscopes, recording apparatus. The laboratory is equipped with a wide variety of electrical supplies, which can be easily linked via the flexible interconnection scheme that has been developed and has equipped to support both a wide range of basic national diploma experiments. The major machine sets in the laboratory comprise two 3 kW induction-motor/dc-motor machine sets, each of which is equipped with an AC and a DC variable speed drive converter system and associated electronic measuring equipment. There are also four dc-motor/synchronous-motor machine sets of 3kW and 0.5 kW, together with a number of more specialised machine sets for specific applications. The laboratory also has a power electronic converters and test sets for use in experiments work.
Power Electronics Laboratory
The power electronics laboratory support project works for development of power electronic converters and their associated controls. There is particular emphasis given to the use of direct digitally controlled switching for converters.
Microelectronics System Laboratory.
The microelectronics system laboratory is adjacent to the power electronics laboratory and has access to all resources of this laboratory including a variety of electrical supplies, rotating machines and instrumentation. The laboratory is equipped with 4 sets of 8085 and two Z80 microprocessors trainers. Simulation facilities are supported by a network of 386 , 486 and pentium PC computers.
Electronics Laboratory
The electronics laboratory is well equipped with for experiments in frequency range from DC to around 20 MHz. About 6 benches places are equipped with power supplies, signal generators and test instruments, and a wide range of small components is held in stock.
Instrumentation & Control Laboratory
The laboratory is equipped with one set of automatic instrumentation control trainer.
Workshops
There are three workshops area equipped for various range of electrical and electronics practical works ranging for basic electrical wiring to industrial wiring project works. There is also a machine winding area for winding exercises.
