are capable of providing enhanced services for audio, video and data . The complete saturation of the current Internet network indicates that satellite communications could play a vital role in Internet and multimedia services.

Outside the Internet, wide area multimedia communication is generally based on telecommunication networks. Analogue telephone systems play only a minor role in multimedia communications owing to their limited bandwidth. The broad band ISDN (B-ISDN) based on ATM technology is expected to provide higher data rates with guaranteed

throughput and low loss. In ATM, quality of service (QoS) is conceptually negotiated between the calling party, network and the called party. Since ATM will have its role as the backbone network for multimedia communications, its integration with Internet is needed. It is hoped that successful integration of ATM into the Internet world will take place in the near future and necessary standards will evolve . The current planning in Brunei is directed towards harnessing these latest technologies for its multimedia applications.

Conclusions

It is clear that Brunei Darussalam is gearing towards full-scale implementation of multimedia services in the country. It will help Brunei to join the international community and share the global benefits of the advances in technology in the next millennium.

With the implementation of the above schemes, it is hoped that the country, though small in size and population, will become competent both locally and internationally and will be able to face challenges that lie ahead in the years to come.
