The Defence Export Services Organisation (DESO) is part of the UK Ministry of Defence (UK MOD). Our mission is to provide the best possible government support to the British defence industry in its export endeavours. DESO also assists the UK's international friends and allies in all aspects of the procurement of British defence equipment by co-ordinating support from the UK MOD, the armed forces and other Government departments and UK industry.
DESO came into being in 1966 when the then Defence Secretary announced the formation of an organisation specifically to assist the defence industry in securing overseas orders. The organisation was at that time called the Defence Sales Organisation (DSO) and it was headed, as it is today, by an industrialist on secondment to the MOD.
The operation grew rapidly to meet the needs of British industry for support in the market. In 1985 the title was changed to the Defence Export Services Organisation, a more accurate reflection of the organisation's role. DESO now employs a military and civilian mix of over 600 people at home and overseas.
Today, there are many hundreds of UK firms involved in the manufacture and supply of defence equipment and DESO's expertise and practical assistance is more than ever in demand. The UK MOD and armed forces fully support British companies in the supply of defence equipment and services. DESO is also ready to help and advise on the best and most cost-effective solutions to defence requirements.
