Information and Media - Television

Radio Television Brunei (RTB)

Television service, which is on the Pal 625 system, started transmission as an all-color network in 1975.

It telecast programmes in English and Malay everyday starting 6.00 am until well after midnight. Broadcasts are received on Channel 5 in Brunei/Muara, Tutong and Temburong districts and Channel 8 in Belait district. Selected Brunei programmes are also available on satellite daily for seven hours starting at around 3.00 in the afternoon Brunei Time.

About 75 percent of the imported programmes are from the United States and the rest from the United Kingdom, Australia and ASEAN countries. Some of the programmes are locally made, including several fine documentaries that won top awards at international competitions such as the Hoso Bunka Foubdation Awards.

The commissioning of the satellite stations at Telisai in 1979 and 1983 not only improved and expanded telecommunications services but also led to better and quicker transmission of news.

As part of its efforts to widen news sources RTB participates in the Asiavision news exchanges programme arranged by the by the Asia Broadcasting Union. Thus, more regional news from neighbouring countries can be viewed. RTB also obtain visual material on current affairs from UPITN and subscribes to Reauters, UPI, and Visnews
