The
Brunei Museum
is situated on a spectacular site on top of a hill at Jalan
Kota Batu overlooking the Brunei river. It is often
acclaimed as one of the most handsome and original public
buildings in Brunei Darussalam, and one of the factors
contributing to this reputation is the collection of
traditional Malay designs decorating the exterior which the
architect developed from tombstones in the vicinity. A
variety of displays including exhibit on Islamic Art in
Asia. A large collection of elaborately gilded Holy Korans
are testament to the dedication and craftsmanship of the
ancient calligraphers, among prized ceramic, glass, jeweler
and carpet treasures. Other galleries in the museum contain
bronzes, Borneo Ethnography displays, a national history
section and so on.
The Royal Regalia
building was officially opened by His Majesty on 30
September 1992, a few days before the start of the official
Silver Jubliee Celebration of His Majesty's Ascension to the
Throne. This museum is a home to collection of royal
regalia, including the royal chariot, gold and silver
ceremonial armoury, the jewel-encrusted crowns used during
the coronation and a replica of the throne which His Majesty
uses on the state occassions. It typifies one important
element of the rich pageantry (Brunei Monarchy).
The
Arts and Handicraft Centre
is situated along the Brunei River, traditional arts and
crafts of Brunei Darussalam are revived at this Centre. The
main purpose of the formation of the centre was the revival
of all the local crafts that were gradually dying out.
Traditional sarongs of gold
or silver thread called "Jong Sarat"are woven in
intricate detail. Hand-tooled jewellery and ornaments such
as the ornamental cannon or the snake-like dagger known as
the "Keris was crafted here.
Malay
Technology Museum is situated close to the Brunei
Museum. Offers the visitor an intriguing insight into the
lifestyle of the people of Brunei in the days gone by.
Focusing on the traditional house-building techniques and
other aspects of Malay life, it shows the ingenuity of the
former inhabitants in their utilisation of the materials
locally available to make life more attractive.
The
Brunei Historical Centre is established in 1982 and was
founded to undertake research into the rich history of
Brunei Darussalam. Among the areas of special emphasis are
the genealogy and history of the Sultans of Brunei and Royal
Family.
