In 1984, Brunei Darussalam gained
independence and joined the Association of Southeast Asian countries,
ASEAN. She also became a member in all functional groups under the
umbrella of ASEAN, among which is the ASEAN Committee on Culture and
Information (COCI).
As a new member, Brunei Darussalam's
first major COCI project was the Fourth ASEAN Square Sculpture
Symposium. The theme of the sculpture symposium was 'Harmony in
Diversity'. The sculpture is located at Damuan Park and overlooks the
Palace of His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam. The park has
since then become a popular jogging area for the young and old alike.
