Brief History Of The School

Sekolah Menengah Pengiran Isteri Hajjah Mariam, Serasa, Muara was formerly know as Sekolah Menengah Serasa, Muara.  It began on 11th July 1985 with 403 students from Form One and Form Two.  These students were studing in SMJA, Maktab SOAS and Sekolah Inggeris Berakas before they were transferred to this school.  They were all from Muara Port, Jalan Muara and Jalan Kota Batu areas.  Intially, the staff consisted of 22 teachers and 15 non-teaching members.

The renaming of Sekolah Menengah Pengiran Isteri Hajjah Mariam was officiated by Her Royal Highness Pengiran Isteri Hajjah Mariam binti Haji Abd Aziz on December 5 1988.
 
 
The first principal of the school was Cikgu Arshad bin Adis who served in this school from 1985 to 1988.  He was succeeded by Cikgu Pengiran Haji Mohd Daud bin Pengiran Haji Puteh who held the post from 1987 to 1990.  From 1990 to August 1996 the principal was Pengiran Haji Duraman bin Pengiran Baha.  The principal of Sekolah Menengah Pengiran Isteri Hajjah Mariam from 1996 - 1999 was Mr. Anthony John Cranshaw.  Our present Principal is Cikgu Haji Awang Jeludin bin Haji Awang Damit.

SCHOOL LOGO

The School Logo denotes the following: 

  • The three books in the centre represent the three basic charateristics required by students in acuiring knowledge.  This is the basic cocept of the school moto  “ Berdisiplin Dalam Menuntut Ilmu” (Discipline in the Pursuit of knowledge). 
  • The yellow in the logo is a symbol of loyality to religion, country and nationality. 
  • The white area represent loyalty to the country and constitution, respect for parents, teacher and school rules. 
  • The bright blue respects the environment of the school. 
  • The dark blue symbolises knowledge.

Logo Sekolah seperti di atas mempunyai pengertian tersendiri.  Tiga bentuk buku yang terletak di tengah-tengah mencerminkan tiga pegangan asas yang perlu dihayati oleh penuntut dalam menimba ilmu dan ini juga akan menjadi teras dalam konsep perlaksanaan motto sekolah “Berdisiplin Dalam Menuntut Ilmu”

SCHOOL LIBRARY

 
The SMPIHM Library is air-conditioned. Apart from Text-books, novels, reference books, there are different types of magazine, newspaper and periodicals to cater to the various needs and interests of the students and staff.  Public examination papers and other materials in Malay and English are kept at the reference section of the comfortably.  The Library also offers service such as binding of notes and examination papers.  Students and teachers can make photocopies of reference materials on self-service basis. A computer is also available in the library for the teachers and students use.

CLEANLINESS OF THE SCHOOL

It is the responsibility of this school to keep the school clean.  As such students should not litter the school with paper, drink packets or this.  Dustbins should be used. 

In addition students must not damage school property such as books, desk, chairs or the school buildings.  Students who are caught damaging school property will be asked to pay for the replacement of the property. 
 
 

KEBERSIHAN SEKOLAH

Setiap penuntut mestilah mempunyai kesedaran bertanggungjawab di atas kebersihan sekolah ini.  Penuntut-penuntut ditegah membuang sampah sarap, kotak-kotak atau bekas-bekas tin minuman di mana-mana saja.  Tong sampah yang ada hendaklah sentiasa digunakan. 

Di samping itu setiap penuntut mestilah menjaga dan memelihara segala harta-benda sekolah saperti buku-buku teks, kerusi, meja dan bangunan sekolah ini sendiri.  Segala harta benda yang dirosakkan oleh penuntut-penuntut hendaklah diganti atau dibayar oleh penuntut yang merosakkan.

Students are required to choose one of the Optional Subjects offered.  Registration forms are sent out to the respective Primary Schools before the third term holidays.  However choice of the Optional Subjects depends on the availability of places as well as the result of the PRIMARY CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION (PCE) Examination.

Although Melayu Islam Beraja (Malay Islamic Monarchy) and Physical Education are non-examinable subjects, it is compulsory for students to attend these classes up to Form 3.  Students must be their sports
 


ENTRY INTO FORM FOUR 

Eligibility for Science Stream 

A credit in Bahasa Melayu, English  Language, Mathematics  and Integrated Science in the PMB plus a Grade One certificate. 
At least credits in 3 relevant subjects and a pass (7) in one other subject (in the relevant group) apart from obtaining a Grade One certificate in PMB Examination 
Subjects offered in Form Four Science Stream 
Core Subjects: 

 1. Bahasa Melayu      2. English Language      3. Mathematics 
 4. Physics                 5. Chemistry                  6. Biology 
 7. Geography 

Optional Subjects:  Additional Mathematics or Principles of Accounts  / IRK 

There is no fixed criteria for the choice of optional subjects. This will depend upon a student’s interest. However, preference will be given to those who took Commercial Studies in the Lower Forms, should they apply for Principles Of Accounts in Form Four. 

Criteria For Streaming Students to ‘O’ Level and ‘N’ Level Courses After PMB 

A. To ‘O’ Level Course

1. Students must pass at least 5 subjects in one sitting. 

  • Must have credit in Bahasa Melayu. 
  • Must have 2 credits and 2 passes in

TECHNICAL AND ARTS STREAM

Students who obtained Grade 2 in the PMB Examination will be emplaced into the Technical and Arts Stream 

There are no special Form Four Technical or Arts classes. The optional subjects offered are:- 

1. Art 
2. Food and Nutrition 

Students are encouraged to continue with the subjects they took in the Lower Secondary. 

Other optional subjects are History and Principles Of Accounts. Preference will be given to students who have done Commercial Studies in the Lower Secondary. 
 

“N”LEVEL (SECONDARY) 

Students who obtained Grade 3 in the PMB Examination will be amplaced into this stream. 

The subjects offered are: 

· 1. Bahasa Melayu 
· 2. English Lanugage 
· 3. Mathematics 
· 4. Double Science (Physics/Biology) 
· 5. Geography 
· 6. History/POA 
· 7. IRK

The ‘N’Level course is a three year programme. At the end of the second year, students are required to sit for the ‘N’Level Examination. If they pass the examination, they will be allowed to sit for the BGCE ‘O’level Examination at the end of the third year. These students are also required to take Monthly Tests and Examinations conducted by the school. 

History or Principles of Accounts

Adalah menjadi tanggungjawab penuntut untuk mengetahui , memahami dan mengikut segala peraturan-peraturan yang ditetapkan di sekolah ini. 

  • Setiap penuntut adalah diwajibkan datang ke sekolah pada hari-hari persekolahan sebelum 7.15 pagi. 
  • Penuntut-penuntut yang tidak dapat hadir ke sekolah kerana sakit atau sebab-sebab yang manasabah, penjaganya hendaklah menulis surat atau memberi maklum kepada pengetua. 
  • Penuntut-penuntut yang tidak hadir (escape) satu mata pelajaran dalam jadual sehari dengan tidak diketahui sebabnya akan diberi amaran.  Surat akan dikirim kepada penjaga. 
  • Penuntut-penuntut yang kedatangannya kurang daripada 85 peratus tidak akan dibenarkan menduduki peperiksaan awam (kecuali tidak hadir ke sekolah atas sebab-sebab yang tertentu) akan ditahan dalam tingkatan yang sama dalam satu tahun. 
  • Penuntut-penuntut adalah ditegah sama sekali melakukan perkara-perkara dibawah ini. 
    • Merokok 
    • Meminum Minuman Keras 
    • Menghidu Gam 
    • Melakukan sebarang jenis perjudian 
    • Menyimpan, Mengedarkan , Memakan , Menghisap dadah atau Ganja.
    • Melakukan perbuatan yang bercanggah dengan hukum-hukum Islam.
  • Penuntut lelaki tidak dibenarkan berambut panjang menutup telinga dan kolar baju. 
  • Penuntut perempuan tidak dibenarkan bersolek, memakai barang-barang kemas dan perhiasan yang berlebihan. 
  • Sekolah juga mengikut peraturan-peraturan yang diarahkan oleh Pihak Jabatan Sekolah-Sekolah, Kementerian Pendidikan melalui surat-surat keliling berkenaan. 
  • Sekolah juga merujuk peraturan-peraturan yang disenaraikan dalam buku Hijau, Disiplin dan Asrama, Negara Brunei Darussalam, Kementerian Pendidikan 1984.

CRITERIA FOR PROMOTION


FORM ONE , TWO , FOUR 

  • Attendance  - Not less than 85% 
  • Passing Mark = Average of (Mid-Year Exam Marks  +  Final Exam Marks) 

  • = 40 % and above
COMPUTATION OF MARKS FOR 2001 EXAM 

1. MID-YEAR EXAMINATION 

  • Test 1 + Test 2              =    30 % 
  • Mid-Year Exam Marks  =    70 % 
  • Total                                  100 %
2. FINAL EXAM 
  • Test 3                    =    30 % 
  • Final Exam Marks  =    70 % 

  • Total                           100 %
Teachers will set a short topical test once a topic is completed in addition to the two standard tests and examinations (Mid-Year and Final) 

Marks for these tests will be recorded in individual subject teacher's Record Books.
